IND vs SL: Ashen Bandara out of the field after a fierce collision with Jeffrey Vandersay
The third ODI of the three-match ODI series played at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, 15th January also saw a fierce fight between Ashen Bandara and Jeffrey Vandersay. On the final ball of the 43rd over of the Indian innings, Virat Kohli pulled Chamika Karunaratne for a boundary from the square leg region, when both Wandersay and Bandara came in to save the ball, but collided with each other instead.
Bandara ran to his left from backward square leg while Vandersay ran to his right from deep midwicket. Bandara dived to stop the ball from going to the boundary but it went near the boundary. Wandersay fell from the top of Bandara and they both fell on the ground. It seemed that Bandara’s knee had crashed into Vandersay’s stomach. And, on an immediate basis, Sri Lankan physiotherapists came to the ground to check on the health of both the players. Soon, the Indian medical staff also came out and stretchers came out and Bandara had to be carried away as well.

Although Vandersay was back on his feet, he had to be carried off the field. Dhananjaya de Silva and Dunith Velaz came on as substitutes. And, Virat Kohli had to wait a while on 99 before completing his century on the last ball of the over. Furthermore, play was briefly stopped after both the Sri Lankan cricketers appeared to be in pain. Bandara was one of the first to feature in the Sri Lankan playing XI, after the visitors also rested De Silva and Velázquez for the series.
