Gautam Gambhir said Indian players should leave IPL for WC 2023 – SBB Times

Former Indian opener, Gautam Gambhir has said that he has no objection to cricketers skipping the IPL to prepare for the ODI World Cup 2023 as he feels that Indian cricket is the main stakeholder and not franchise cricket. India is all set to host the World Cup later this year as the team looks to lift the trophy once again on home soil after 12 years.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Road to Glory, Gautam Gambhir said that a cricketer can choose to ignore the IPL this year to prepare for the World Cup, as quoted by News18.

Explaining the same, Gautam Gambhir said, ‘If the franchise (IPL) has to suffer, then they have to suffer. Indian cricket is the main stakeholder. Not IPL. IPL is a byproduct. In such a situation, if India wins the World Cup, then it is a big opportunity. So if an important player doesn’t play in IPL, so be it. IPL happens every year, World Cup happens every four years.

Gambhir also expressed that the players may take a break from T20Is this year and stressed the importance of the team playing enough cricket together in the lead up to the tournament.

Explaining this, Gautam Gambhir said, ‘If people playing all three formats want to take a break, they can take a break from T20. But certainly not in the ODI format. I think the biggest mistake Indian cricket has made in the last two World Cups is that these guys haven’t played enough cricket together. Tell me how many times have we organized a best eleven in the park. we did not.

He further added, “Only at the time of the World Cup (2022 T20 World Cup) we decided to have the best playing XI and unfortunately that was not the best playing XI. So these guys have to play together even if they want to take a break.” , then break should be in T20 and not in 50 over game.
