Ever since his return from injury last year, KL Rahul has failed to prove his worth in international cricket. The opener scored only one half-century in the entire T20 World Cup 2022, where India suffered an embarrassing 10-wicket defeat in the semi-finals, and failed to cross the 50-run mark during the Test series in Bangladesh. Rahul played crucial innings in the Bangladesh ODIs as he played in the middle order and retained his place in the format for the series against Sri Lanka.
Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin spoke at length about Rahul’s concerns, saying that coaches need to work with the India star. Azhar also pointed out that Rahul is getting out because of his mistakes rather than the talent of the bowler.
“I think consistency is the problem in KL Rahul’s case. But I think there are coaches who should rectify their mistakes. In my opinion he is a good player but lacks consistency in his game.
Rahul, who has been facing a string of poor scores since his international comeback, was bowled for 39 in the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Guwahati on Tuesday.
“I think Rahul is getting out very well. Mainly it is not the good balls that are getting him out. It is first of all poor shot selection that is causing the problem.
Rahul also wore wicketkeeping gloves in the first ODI of the series against Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, Azharuddin has been the president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association for over a year now. “It has been good so far. We are fighting to regain the lost reputation of the Hyderabad Cricket Association. We have done a lot of work (in terms of renovation) in the stadium arena and dressing rooms.
“When I took over, it was all in a pathetic condition. We will be hosting our second international match in three months’ time (vs New Zealand). We are very happy that BCCI has recognized our hard work and we are being allotted matches,” said Azharuddin.
