New Delhi. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah stated that if Indian head coach Rahul Dravid wishes to continue in his role after the completion of his tenure, he will have to reapply. Shah clarified that the appointment of a new coach would be for a three-year term.

Dravid’s current contract was for a period of two years. Following the 50-over World Cup last year, Dravid and his support staff’s tenure was extended by a year. Under Rahul Dravid’s guidance, the Indian team made it to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.

During a press interaction at the BCCI office on Thursday, Shah mentioned, “We will make the appointment in the next few days. Rahul Dravid’s term has come to an end.”

The final decision lies with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). Shah further added, “If Dravid wishes to continue coaching the Indian team, he can reapply. We are looking for a coach for a long term, approximately three years.” Shah emphasized that the selection of coaches for different formats does not set any precedent, but the decision rests with the Cricket Advisory Committee.

Shah highlighted, “There is no set precedent for appointing different coaches for different formats in Indian cricket. We have many players who play across all formats. Players like Rishabh Pant, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma participate in all formats. Ultimately, it is a decision for the CAC. I will abide by whatever decision they make.”

The possibility of appointing a foreign coach also exists, as per Shah. He stated, “If the CAC chooses a foreign coach, I will not intervene.” The filling of the national selector position will also be announced soon, according to Shah.

Shah expressed, “Several interviews have been conducted for the selector’s position. We can announce it soon.” Greg Barclay’s term as ICC chairman will end later this year, but Shah showed no interest in that position. He said, “Let me stay in the BCCI. Leave it to speculation. But let me stay in the BCCI. Am I not doing a good job?”

In conclusion, Rahul Dravid’s future as head coach post the T20 World Cup 2024 will depend on his coaching ability, leadership, and the team’s performance. His previous tenure demonstrated commendable performance, and it is expected that he will continue to be a symbol of excellence in the future. The selection of a new head coach will be a crucial decision for the Indian cricket team’s future.
