India registered a close 12-run win over New Zealand in the first ODI of the three-match series at Hyderabad on January 18, 2023. One of the top performers of the game was young opener Shubman Gill, who became the youngest Indian batsman to score a double century on Wednesday. During his innings of 208, Gill also broke the record for the youngest to score a double century in men’s cricket, earning him much praise from the cricket fraternity.
After the match, Indian captain, Rohit Sharma along with Ishan Kishan welcomed Gill to the ODI double century club. In a video released by the BCCI, Rohit, Ishan and Shubman can be seen having fun in a funny way. Rohit started by welcoming Shubman to the 200 club and said that his innings was great to watch.
In the video, Rohit Sharma can be heard saying, “The way you built your innings it was great to watch because on the other side we were losing wickets at regular intervals. For a set batsman wickets to fall at the other end It is not easy to carry on batting like that with 208. Our next best score after your 208 is 34, and that tells you a lot about how well you batted.

After finishing off with Shubman, Rohit Sharma took a jibe at Ishan Kishan and asked him how he could be dropped for three matches after scoring a double hundred. He asked, ‘Ishaan you scored a double century and then you did not play three matches. What is it?” Ishaan replied, ‘Brother, you were the captain of the team. But yes, we learn from everything. Do you like batting at number four?’ Rohit continued.” But Ishan Kishan replied, “Yes brother, I like it.”
In further conversation Shubman Gill reveals some of the stories from inside the dressing room. Asked how he felt about Rohit Sharma scoring a double hundred, Gill said he was getting starts but he was missing out on the chance to bat for a long time, which he did not do on Wednesday.

In the video shared by the BCCI, Shubman Gill said, “It felt quite amazing. I got a good start once again in this game, I knew I had the chance to play a long innings, it felt good when it came to fruition.” I thought to myself that I need to put pressure on the bowler by sticking with the runs as it is easier to bowl the dot ball after the wicket has fallen.
Ishan Kishan pokes fun at Shubman when asked about his pre-match routine. Gill didn’t even spare his Indian roommate and spoke candidly about how the southpaw destroys their routine on a daily basis.

Shubman Gill elaborated, “Ishaan destroys my pre-match routine. He’s on his iPad all the time and doesn’t use AirPods when his movie is playing at full volume. I abuse him and tell him to either turn down the volume or use airpods. Ishaan scolds me saying this is his room and he will do as per his wish and we fight every day. This is my pre-match routine.”
