After the match, Rohit told Star Sports, ‘I did not know that Shami had done this. “When he went to an appeal … again, he [Shanaka] Batting at 98. The way he batted was brilliant. We owe it to him. We can’t get him out like this. We wanted to get him out the way we thought we would get him out. But it was nothing like what we thought about. But once again, hats off to him, he played really well.”
Had Rohit not withdrawn Shami’s appeal, Shanaka would have been dismissed, but the Sri Lankan captain was allowed to continue his innings and was dismissed for 108 not out off 88 balls. India won the game by 67 runs after Virat Kohli scored 113 off 87 balls – his 45th ODI century – and restricted the hosts to 373 for 7 in 50 overs.
After winning the T20 series 2-1, India have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The teams will now travel to Kolkata for the second ODI to be held at the Eden Gardens on January 12.
