Young Indian opener Shubman Gill brought up his second consecutive ODI century with an impressive performance against New Zealand in the first match of the 3-match series in Hyderabad on Wednesday, January 18. On a pitch where big guns Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggled, Gill became the youngest batsman to score a double century in ODIs and crossed the landmark after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. He is also the 5th Indian to do so.
Virat Kohli was dismissed by the left arm spin of Mitchell Santner. Ishan Kishan, who did not find a place in the playing XI for the 3-match series against Sri Lanka, could manage only 5 runs in 14 balls. Suryakumar Yadav played a decent cameo but the onus was always on Shubman Gill who solidified brilliantly.

Shubman Gill found an able ally in Hardik Pandya before a solid partnership broke down under controversial circumstances. India then lost a few quick wickets but there was no stopping Shubman, who had to wait patiently for more regular chances to come his way. He batted like a seasoned professional in only his 19th ODI innings. During his masterclass, he broke the Indian record for the fastest to 1000 ODI runs jointly held by Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan for years.
Shubman Gill made his ODI debut against New Zealand. This is a remarkable thing for Indian cricket in an ODI World Cup year. It was a bold move to leave Ishan Kishan out despite scoring a record-breaking 210 in Bangladesh.

Shubman Gill repaid the team management’s faith in him with brilliant innings against New Zealand and now there is no doubt that Shubman Gill is the most dynamic young ODI batsman since the emergence of Virat Kohli. Former cricketers have heaped praise on Shubman Gill, saying the young batsman is making a name for himself in the 50-over format of the game.
