Legendary Indian cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar praised young opener Shubman Gill after his brilliant double century in the first ODI against New Zealand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, January 18. The opener hit 19 fours and nine sixes. Courtesy his dominating knock and his remarkable innings, the Men in Blue posted 349 runs on the board after 50 overs to eventually win the first ODI by 12 runs.

Sunil Gavaskar, who was calling the game from the commentary box, was quite impressed with the young cricketer and appreciated Gill’s maturity, which was quite evident during his marathon innings. Terming it as an incredible knock, the Little Master said that Gill batted like a youngster, who has the maturity of a 35-year-old batsman.

Despite scoring a double century in the third ODI against Bangladesh, the Indian team management decided to drop Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma opened the innings with Shubman Gill. Since then, he has repaid the trust of the team management with consistent performances in the 50-over format.

Gill scored a brilliant hundred in the final ODI against Sri Lanka and picked it up from where he played an even better knock against the Kiwis on Wednesday. Gavaskar, who was very impressed with the maturity of Shubman’s innings against the Black Caps, praised the youngster for it. The batting legend believes that Gill is certainly preparing well and getting ready for the upcoming ODI World Cup to be held in India later this year.
