New Delhi. The Prime Minister of Trinidad, Dr. Keith Roll, has revealed that the upcoming T20 World Cup, hosted jointly by the West Indies and the United States, faces a threat of terrorist attack. Roll stated that additional efforts would be made to enhance national security preparations and response readiness to manage the risk.
The T20 World Cup 2024 is set to commence on June 1st, featuring a total of 20 teams. Media reports suggest that the threat is particularly directed towards the West Indies, which will host the Super 8 stage, semi-finals, and final matches. According to Roll, as quoted by the Trinidad Daily Express, “Unfortunately, the threat of terrorism remains a constant danger in the diverse expressions of the 21st century world.”
While Roll did not name any specific organization, reports indicate that the Islamic State has issued the threat through its propaganda channels. The Prime Minister further stated, “It is incumbent upon all nations, like ours, when hosting large or small gatherings, to take seriously all known or suspected risks by exerting additional efforts in national security preparations and response readiness.”
Preparedness to Counter the Cricket West Indies Threat
Roll emphasized that matches will be played at 9 venues for the T20 World Cup, with West Indies hosting 6 of them. Vigilance will be maintained to prevent security breaches. He continued, “It is true that bad actors can behave badly in any way. Therefore, it is not possible to completely close all opportunities. However, to address this threat, we can remain vigilant at the local and regional levels. By working with our intelligence and other security agencies, we can safeguard venues during the tournament and protect the public.”
Matches will be held in Antigua, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indies. In the United States, matches will take place in Florida, New York, and Texas. A high-voltage match between India and Pakistan will be played in New York on June 9th.
Security Plan Preparedness
Cricket West Indies assured that special attention is being given to security while keeping the upcoming tournament in mind. All necessary arrangements are being made to ensure it. CEO of Cricket West Indies, Johnny Graves, told cricketers, “We work closely with officials in host countries and cities and continuously monitor the global landscape to identify any risks recognized in our events. There are appropriate plans in place to mitigate any identified risks.”
He further stated, “We want to reassure all stakeholders that safety is our top priority in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place.” When contacted for a response, ICC representatives said their stance is similar to Cricket West Indies.
